How to clean a microwave with just water

Step 1 – Put water in a bowl

bowl of water in a microwave

Take a small bowl and fill it with cold water.

Pro tip:If I have a lemon, an orange, or even a lime to spare, I like to add the peel to the water because it adds some extra cleaning power and makes the microwave smell gorgeous. But if you don’t have that, water alone will do just as well.

Here’s more on that:

Step 2 – Cook on high for 2.5 minutes

Now cook the bowl of water on high for two and a half minutes. When you open the door it should be nice and steamy inside. If not, cook for a minute or so longer.

Step 3 – Remove the bowl

Remove the bowl of water. It will be very hot, so you may need to use some oven gloves.

Step 4 – Wipe inside the microwave

wipe the inside of the microwave with a microfiber cloth

Remove the glass plate and then take a damp microfiber cloth and wipe all around the inside of the microwave. Due to the steam, the dirt should be nicely softened and should wipe away very easily with a cloth.

If you find there is still some stubborn burnt-on food, put the bowl of water back in the microwave and cook again for a couple of minutes.

Don’t forget to wipe the glass plate. You should find that dirt comes off easily. If not, soak it in some soapy water for a few minutes.

Step 5 – Wipe the outside of the microwave

Now you are in cleaning mode, it’s an excellent time to wipe around the outside of the microwave.

Grab a new damp microfiber cloth and wipe all around the outside. Finish off with a dry cloth and your microwave will gleam like new again.
