They are commonly found in bedding, upholstery, and carpets.
While they don’t bite, they can cause a range of health problems, including allergies, asthma, and even eczema. Dust mites feed on dead skin cells shed by humans and pets, so they can easily accumulate in your mattress over time.
They can be a real nuisance, especially for people with allergies or respiratory issues.
But the good news is that there are several simple and effective things you can do to keep your mattress clean and free of these pesky critters.

Tip 1: Wash bedding regularly
Dust mites thrive in warm and humid environments, and your bedding provides the perfect breeding ground.
When washing your bedding, a temperature of at least 130 °F (54 °C) is recommended to kill dust mites. You can also add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle, which can help to kill any remaining dust mites.
Tip 2: Use dust mite covers
If you want to get rid of dust mites in your mattress, one of the best things you can do is to use dust mite covers.
These covers are specially designed to keep dust mites from getting into your mattress, which can help you sleep better at night and reduce allergy symptoms.
Look for covers that are made from materials that are breathable, so you don’t get too hot while you sleep. Some covers are also waterproof, which can be helpful if you have young children or pets who may have accidents in the bed.
When using dust mite covers, it’s important to wash them regularly to keep them clean and free of dust mites. Most covers can be washed in the washing machine, but be sure to check the label for specific washing instructions.
Tip 3: Vacuum your mattress and use a HEPA filter
Vacuuming your mattress regularly can help to remove dust mites, their eggs, and their poop.
Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter to prevent the dust and allergens from being blown back into the air. Use the upholstery brush attachment to get into all the crevices and corners of your mattress. Be sure to vacuum both sides of the mattress thoroughly.
It’s a good idea to vacuum your mattress at least once a month to ensure that it stays clean and free of dust mites and allergens.
Tip 4: Use a mattress spray
After vacuuming your mattress, you can also use a mattress spray to inhibit dust mites and other allergens.

Tip 5: Reduce humidity
If you want to prevent of dust mites from living in your mattress, reducing the humidity in your bedroom is a must. Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments, so keeping the air dry can help control their population.
Here are some ways to reduce humidity:
- Use a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier can help remove excess moisture from the air, making it harder for dust mites to survive.
- Open windows and doors. Allowing fresh air to circulate in your bedroom can help reduce humidity levels.
- Use an air conditioner. An air conditioner can help regulate the temperature and humidity in your bedroom.
Dust mites can thrive in bedding that’s damp from sweat or spills. So, be sure to air out your bedding regularly and wash it in hot water to kill any dust mites that may have taken up residence.
Tip 6: Freeze your pillows
Dust mites cannot survive cold and freezing temperatures.
To freeze your pillows, place them in a plastic bag and put them in the freezer for at least 24 hours, then let them come to room temperature before using them again. You can do this once a month to keep your pillows free of dust mites.
Keep in mind that while freezing can kill dust mites, it does not remove the dead mites and their waste products, which can still cause an allergic reaction. So, it’s still important to use allergen-proof pillow covers.
Tip 7: Steam clean your mattress
If you’re looking for an effective way to get rid of dust mites in your mattress, steam cleaning is a great option. Not only does it kill dust mites, but it also removes any dirt, stains, or odors that may have accumulated over time.
To steam clean your mattress, you’ll need a steam cleaner with an upholstery attachment. Start by removing all bedding and vacuuming the mattress with a hose and upholstery brush attachment to remove any loose debris.
Next, fill the steam cleaner with water and turn it on. Hold the upholstery attachment about 6 inches from the mattress and move it slowly over the surface, making sure to cover every inch. Pay extra attention to any stains or areas that look particularly dirty.
Once you’ve steam cleaned the entire mattress, let it dry completely before putting any bedding back on. This may take a few hours, so plan accordingly.
Aim to steam clean your mattress once every six months to keep it clean and free of dust mites.

Tip 8: Use essential oils

Tip 9: Replace your mattress
Most mattresses have a lifespan of around 7–10 years, but this can vary depending on the quality of the mattress and how well you take care of it. If you’re experiencing allergy symptoms or notice that your mattress is sagging or lumpy, it’s probably time to replace it.
When shopping for a new mattress, look for one that is hypoallergenic and has a dust mite barrier. Some mattresses are made with materials that naturally repel dust mites, such as latex or wool. These materials are also breathable and can help regulate your body temperature while you sleep.
Another option is to use a mattress encasement or cover that is specifically designed to keep out dust mites. Be sure to choose a cover that is certified by a third-party organization, such as the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, to ensure that it is effective.
